Background of the Study
The proliferation of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) has revolutionized banking operations globally by enabling faster and more accessible financial transactions. However, the increasing adoption of ATMs has also brought a surge in fraudulent activities, such as card skimming, phishing, and unauthorized withdrawals. In Nigeria, ATM fraud is a significant concern, with banks reporting substantial financial losses annually. According to CBN reports (2024), ATM-related fraud accounted for over 40% of electronic banking fraud cases in 2023, emphasizing its prevalence.
Access Bank Nigeria, as a leading financial institution, has invested in advanced technologies to enhance ATM security. Despite these efforts, the bank continues to face challenges in combating sophisticated fraud schemes. Studies by Yusuf et al. (2023) reveal that ATM fraud negatively impacts banks' profitability by increasing operational costs, reducing customer confidence, and causing reputational damage.
This study aims to critically examine the relationship between ATM fraud and bank profitability, using Access Bank Nigeria as a case study. The findings are expected to provide actionable insights for minimizing fraud and optimizing financial performance in the banking sector.
Statement of the Problem
ATM fraud poses a severe threat to the profitability and sustainability of Nigerian banks. Access Bank Nigeria has reported a steady rise in fraud cases despite deploying advanced security measures. Fraudulent activities such as card cloning, PIN theft, and insider collusion not only result in financial losses but also erode customer trust and loyalty.
Existing studies have primarily focused on the technological aspects of ATM fraud, neglecting its direct implications on bank profitability. There is a need to bridge this gap by analyzing how fraud impacts operational costs, customer behavior, and the overall financial performance of banks like Access Bank Nigeria.
Objectives of the Study
1. To identify the common types of ATM fraud in Access Bank Nigeria.
2. To analyze the financial impact of ATM fraud on Access Bank’s profitability.
3. To recommend strategies for mitigating ATM fraud and enhancing profitability.
Research Questions
1. What are the prevalent types of ATM fraud in Access Bank Nigeria?
2. How does ATM fraud affect Access Bank’s financial performance?
3. What measures can be adopted to prevent ATM fraud and protect profitability?
Research Hypotheses
1. ATM fraud significantly reduces Access Bank’s profitability.
2. The prevalence of ATM fraud negatively influences customer trust in Access Bank.
3. Enhanced security measures significantly mitigate ATM fraud in Access Bank.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on ATM fraud and its implications for profitability at Access Bank Nigeria. It will analyze fraud cases reported between 2023 and 2025. Limitations include restricted access to detailed financial data and the evolving nature of fraud techniques.
